I made a resolution for this year to be more creative with the materials I already have on hand. I am hoping to finish undone projects that I have had stored in my sewing and craft cabinet and also just to get crafty and use a lot of the "stuff" I have accumulated over the years. My resolve is to do one project a month.
We bought this desk last Fall and I just love it,but I was worried that writing on the soft pinewood surface might indent the finish. So here is the desk-mat that I made. I started with a strong piece of cardboard which I covered with some plain brown wallpaper. This paper already was prepasted so just wetting it after cutting the size right made this part easy. The sides are extra layovers of cardboard with padding before covering with the cloth. I also embellished with gold trim. I used tacky glue for applying the cloth and trim.
I am happy with the result and as you can see in one of the pics I can tuck papers or whatever under the side flaps somewhat like a paperweight would do.
Writing on this feels so much smoother that on the wood surface!
I also want to add that the pretty journal, pen and the double frame are the gifts I have received from my Secret Sister. I hope she sees this post!

That looks nice.
That is absolutely lovely. I'll have to get a better look at it next time we're up that way. A craft a month sounds like a great resolution. I want to try and do more sewing and crafts this year, too, and find ways to recycle old clothing into useful things. Currently, I'm working on a design for work gloves made of Luke's old jeans. My first try was way to complicated and the thumb was way too large, so this time I ripped the seams out of an old pair of gloves and used the pieces for a guide. I just need to cut it out and see if it will work.
