Still Keeping the Homefire Burning! (with a little help from his friends)

We still love wood heat after 30 years of having wood stoves in our different homes. In our opinion nothing can compare to the warmth that a wood fire brings to your bones. Glenn gets tired of it towards the end of the season and I don't blame him because he does all of the work to keep us in wood. We have used this stove for two seasons now and haven't had to buy wood once ! This year all the wood came from just down our road maybe 1/4 mile where we discovered some felled trees laying while walking the dogs. Glenn got permission from the owner to take the wood. Last year we saw a sign in front of someones house maybe 5 miles from here, "Free firewood..You cut". So my hard working husband got many loads from there until it was just about gone. Its pretty much been like that for the past 30 winters! God has warmly blessed us!
I feel quite gifted in that I can get a good fire going from scratch. Something I just had to learn back in the days when Papa was working full time and more!(actually he is still working pretty much a full-time job. Advance Auto seems to love him!) Many mornings the fire would be out and I would be the one who had to get it started or else no one would get out of bed!
I learned the country term bring in a "turn" of wood for the fire. I was told that whose ever turn it was to bring in a couple logs to add is how "turn of wood" came to be.
This is the fourth wood stove that has kept us cozy and warm over our almost 34 years of wedded winters...I did not say dreaded! I may have a more romantic picture of this than Papa who has done the really hard work of it all!
I have always liked the saying that you get "twice warmed" from using wood for heat.. The felling, sawing and splitting does tend to warm one up. My love does it well! We have saved so much money in this way! It has really been satisfying not to be paying the big utility companies or the soaring price of oil!

I don't know why, but I never saw this post until tonight. I guess it got pushed down by the "do you believe in God" post. I have lots of great memories of time spent in front of the wood burning stove. Sara and I would love to have a wood stove. We do a good bit of campfire burning. In fact we did that tonight and cooked some veggie burgers. Maybe next winter we'll get that stove...

I never saw it either. Weird. Very good post, though that brings back lots of "warm" memories.
