Plan a Sugar-Free Healthy Valentines Day.

I promise I will no longer provide my grandchildren with anything sugary it is so bad for all especially growing children. It also kills the appetite for good wholesome food. No child should get dessert or in- between meal snacks if they are not eating the healthy meals mother provides. Eventually a child WILL eat if hungry enough. Some kids are more stubborn than others and it will take longer for their natural appetite to kick-in , as they get water they will not die ! I always told my kids from when they were very little, this is not a restaurant where you pick different foods. You get what Mama makes or you don't eat. Sounds cruel but this is tough love in the childs best interest. White sugar and white flour are poison and cause disease, if we eat it everyday. I do and did make biscuits with white flour but I always tried to add some ww flour to the mix. I would lay awake in bed and worry if I knew my kids did not get enough vegetables for that day. A childs body grows so rapidly and it will not grow healthy(the brain also) on junky food. You kids rarely rarely ever got sick. In fact I remember saying to you kids why don't you get sick once in awhile(jokingly) cause I love to play nurse. You kids even ate and liked cooked greens (kale) when you were very little. Your Papa and I were very much on the same page with this and that's why it worked so well.
I guess this is ONE of the reasons we hated Halloween so much, no kid should have that much candy .

This recipe is very similar to the one we use to make. You can leave out the coconut and add powered milk in place of and substitute raisins for dates.
Carob Fudge Candy

1 c. honey

1 c. peanut butter

1 c. carob powder

1/2 c. sesame seeds, unhulled

1 c. sunflower seeds, hulled

1/2 c. shredded coconut

1/2 c. chopped dates

Instructions
In saucepan, heat honey and peanut butter until mixture bubbles slightly. Remove from heat. Stir in carob powder. Stir in sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, coconut and dates. Pour into greased 8x8 inch square pan. Refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours. Cut into squares. Makes about 16 pieces.

I just discovered a trick to get mine to eat their veggies. I prepared a plate with broccoli florets, lettuce strips and carrots cut in matchstick size with a bowl of ranch dressing BEFORE serving their sandwiches for lunch and they gobbled it up!
A good alternative to candy are the Fruitabu fruit rolls. They are sweetened with fruit juice only. They are a bit expensive, so we just get them for a treat. The Kettle Valley fruit strips are good like that, too, and I think there is another kind in the baby food aisle. Anyway, thanks for the reminder. It's very encouraging!

Oops, I published the comment too soon. One other reason candy is bad is because of the food coloring. Especially the red stuff. I took care of a boy last summer who had problems with violent hyperactivity until his mother did her own research and switched to an all natural diet. She could see immediate reactions to certain foods, especially the red stuff. Also, avoid all the FD&C colorings, because they contain lead. I have broken down a few times and let them eat candy now and then, especially when it's from someone else who is well meaning, and I suppose a little won't kill them once in a great while, but I really don't like to. Hey, maybe next time someone gives them some, I'll dissolve it in a little water and let them paint with it :) !!!! That's as much fun as eating it any day!

Yes, Sara, red candy has always scared me. I really have a hard time with the red velvet cake...a whole bottle of red food coloring in it!!! I have never made one and never eaten any. Terrible stuff! And I also agree with you once in awhile a little white sugar candy or cake won't hurt but it should be seldom. We have gotten off track and are trying to eat smarter. I know I had a weakness for red licorice but I don't want it any more.
Yes Julia you were making pretty good food choices when you became a diabetic. That is why that mother who made a comment at your school about you must be a sugar addict really set me off!No one become a type 1 diabetic from eating too much sugar. Some people are so ignorant. I am so proud how you are feeding Sean. There are good healthy cookie recipes that taste good, or you can buy cookies in the health food section. They may cost more but I think healthy cookies may satisfy with less .
The other thing is the teeth. Nothing rots teeth like sugar and I felt it was my job that you kids brushed your teeth well(I know from experience they will not brush well unless you are watching them ) and didn't eat of sweets, since I was not the one out bringing in the money and I had the privilege of being with you kids all the time. It was only right to do a good job so Papas hard earned money would not go to dentists and doctors. There was no way I wanted him to have to get a 2nd job and be away from us more! I would have rather lived in a shack(and have healthy food) than to have him work more than he already did!
