Internal Resorption

Now there's a term for ya' !

Went to the dentist today and the lady who was doing the cleaning commented that a certain tooth of mine had an unusual color to it and she asked if I had hit it or knocked it loose recently. I told her no. She said she was pretty sure something was wrong with it, but would wait until the xrays came back to say for sure. The xrays showed material missing from the INSIDE of my tooth. The dentist said that she suspects it is a rarely seen condition known as internal resorption. You can look up the technical jargain online, but basically, for reasons that are unknown, the body chooses a tooth that it doesn't like anymore and begins to destroy it from the inside out. If left untreated, the tooth will weaken internally to the point of breaking. Treatment options are varied, but are basically three. Sometimes the hollow tooth can be filled in with a calcium substance. More commonly, a root canal is done. The third option is tooth extraction, but that is generally only done in extreme cases where the damage has already progressed quite far. I have never even had a cavity so I am very nervous about this! I am supposed to go back on Thursday for a more extensive exam on this tooth. Please pray that it will go well.

By the way...this isn't the front tooth that I knocked loose in the front of our house on Dove Hill Rd. That one has never come loose since even though the dentists have confirmed that it is dead. As long as it doesn't give me any trouble, they have said it can stay there.

Interesting. I think I'd probably just have it pulled out if it were me. I need to make a dentist appointment soon. We opted for dental insurance this year and haven't used it at all.

We just don't have dental insurance. We know we should have it but our health insurance is expensive enough!

I wonder if this can happen to your brain as well. If so, I think It would explain what I have.

I remember you knocking your tooth with a glass and chipping it when you pulled it out of the dishwasher, but I don't recall you knocking one loose.

If this does happen to a brain..I'm really not sure which of the three treatment options I would choose. None of them sound too good. I'm not sure what filling your head full of calcium would do, but it can't be too good.

Funny, but I don't remember the whole dishwasher and chipped tooth episode. I'm sure it happened, but my long term memory is terrible.

Hi Justin, I don't remember the dishwasher incident either but I may not have been there when you wonderful sons were either unloading or loading it for us! Jacob has always had a great memory so I'm sure it happened. Do you have any small chips on your front teeth? All you children went for years without cavities. Restricting candy intake and making sure you all brushed at least twice a day had something to do with it! I know Pop and I always went by the saying "don't expect without inspect".Kids just aren't going to do things such as tooth brushing unless a parent watches or checks that they are doing it! It was another of those things that I knew was my job since I wasn't working outside the home to do the best that we could not to have any expensive dental bills.
I would be interested to know if any of you other Harding kids are still cavity-free.
Justin,Pop remembers coming home from work in Merrifield the day you had that tooth accident. I must have been very alarmed by it to have him come all the way home from work! I think you were jumping off a stump and fell...is yhat who you remember it?

I'm surprised that you remember it that well, Mom. I didn't remember Pop coming home because of it, but I guess he did. As far as I can recall, Pop just pushed it back up in and it seemed to hold ok. I don't think that I ever had it looked at by the dentist, but maybe I just don't remember that either. I was running up the front yard and attempted to jump over a chopping block that Pop had on the front stoop, but my foot just didn't quite clear it. I landed hard on that cement with my tooth.

And yes...I checked my front tooth and there is a small chip in the bottom that I really hadn't noticed before. That cup must really have been stuck for me to be pulling on it that hard!

Luke has perfect teeth! No cavities and perfectly straight. Not fair!

Anyone still have their wisdom teeth? I still have all four of mine.

I still have mine...guess that's why I'm soooo smart!

I still have my wisdom teeth. I got a cavity in one of my wisdom teeth last year and had to have it filled which was a whole lot cheaper than having all of them removed. since they don't bother me

I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled out by Dr Breeden but it grew back. I kept that tooth for years but the kids played with it and lost it.

Julia said...

I have never heard of a wisdom tooth growing back? and ewwww, for letting your kids play with an old tooth. lol

Doctor couldn't find anything wrong. All tests were negative for the condition, so that is good news. She is sending her findings to a couple other specialists to see if they have a different opinion.
