Why we should just abolish health insurance.
This is exactly what I have thought for a long time. Every time I hear about some politician's idea for "fixing" health care, I think to myself "Health insurance IS the problem". You can't fix a problem by spreading it out to more people. Funny about the food insurance, but that is the exact same example that I have used when talking to people about this. It's is hard for me to talk hard about health insurance as that is the industry that I am in and I guess I would be without a job without it, but maybe I wouldn't need such a good paying job if it weren't for the exorbitant prices of health insurance. Anyway, excellent writeup and not very long. Please read.

Maybe along with healthcare overhaul we should demand that congress pass auto insurance overhaul as well. It would cover new tires, oil changes, belts and hoses, new sparkplugs, air filters, and reimbursment for automatic carwashes that are in the network that your plan previously approved. Then we could all complain that car insurance cost too much. Meanwhile everytime our car has a minor issue we bring it in for a laundry list of checks and services if only just so we can feel like we are getting our moneys worth.
Doctors and hospitals can charge exuberant rates because they know that the insurance companies can pay them. Meanwhile the insurance companies can simply charge more to cover the cost. We are told doctors deserve their high pay because they are in demand but would they be in such demand if people were not flooding their offices with every splinter and hangnail? If all you have to pay is a small co-pay why not? You might as well get your moneys worth out of those high premiums. Ofcourse, secretly, this is what doctors want. They want you to abuse the system so they can seem over-worked and under-appreciated while they watch their stack of cash grow.
I really can't see health insurance being abolished anytime soon, though.I do agree with you that it would make the most sense. Unfortunatley "making sense" is not what our government is best at.
Health insurance is one of those "essential life items" that people miraculously thrived for thousands of years without.
