DOSBOX

I've been playing the old Wolfenstein 3D game that Luke and I spent so many hours on as kids.  I am playing it on my Windows 7 laptop, but using something called Dosbox to do it.  I downloaded dosbox a couple years back, but thought it looked too confusing and gave up trying to make it work.  Recently a friend from church encouraged me to give it another try.  It is so fun to play the games that we grew up playing.  I am going to try to find the Duke Nukem series also and maybe Commander Keen.

Didn't mean to leave you out Jake, but I just don't remember you playing them to the extent that Luke and I did.

Luke, do you remember on some of those Wolfenstein levels actually drawing out the maps so we could figure out where we were.  You almost had to or you would run around through those rooms forever and never get to the exit.  Ha!  And we were playing them all on a 386 16mghz with 4 megs of ram.  Sweet memories...

Maybe you guys have already done this, but if not and you want help on how to set it up give me a call.

ok...so downloaded Duke Nukem (the original) and thought that it was only the first level. Remember that we had to send away for levels 2 and 3. I think the first was free and they charged for the other 2. Well...they are all free now of course, but I was searching for levels 2 and 3 (which are actually all included now. When I was searching I came across Duke Nukem 2. This is an actual second version of the game, not level 2. I don;t remember ever playing this one and I honestly don't like it as much as the first. Anyway...Duke Nukem is running great on the laptop. Super fun !!!

A couple others I have thought of trying are Test Drive (remember "pass any low flying planes?") and the vbasic game Gorillas (throwing bananas).

Anyone remember any of the others that we had?

I downloaded dosbox a year or so ago but really had difficulty getting it to work. The reason I downloaded it (and discovered it) was because I was trying to find a way to play Scorched Earth. Remember that one? Remember the big nuke that would blow up like half the screen. That was awesome.

yeah...good one Jake. It seems like I had that one working a while back (probably on my older desktop that I hardly ever use anymore). I'll have to check. Either way, I'm going to put it on the laptop because I really liked that game also.

BTW...the nukes were definitely the best except when you accidentally nuked yourself.

oh yeah...another BTW

blowing stuff up is almost always awesome

Update: Scorched Earth seems to work fine except for the sound. The sound was kind of important to that game also since the different munitions had distinctly different sounds. I'll see if I can dig up any web posts from others with the same problem.

Nevermind the earlier comment. The sound works fine.

Do you still get to choose your tank and earn money to buy different munitions?

Yep...it's exactly the same as before except it is inside the DosBox emulator window instead of taking up the entire screen. I can set my resolution so it takes up just about the entire screen. I got Qbasic to run also and just finished playing a hearty game of Gorillas. So wierd how it is exactly the same as the old computer with the big square mouse cursor inside of Qbasic and the old keystrokes for Alt and then the headers light up with the key to hit next. Just like I am on the old Leading Edge machine. DosBox has come a long way and works SUPER!!! I am amazed at how many of these old games are available to download for free.

Most recent correction...Alt + Enter while in DosBox gives you full screen mode. Scorch works and looks exactly like it should when doing it that way.

Also gonna grab Crystal Caves and Battle Chess.

Oooh..here's one. Hugo's House of Horrors. Anyone else think of any?

And another...LHX attack chopper

Secret weapons of the luftwaffe.

There were several hugos, not just the house of horrors.

Crystal caves rings a bell but you will have to jog my memory with some details on that one.

Oregon Trail

Who was Duke nukems nemesis? Remember the last level you had to jump up and shoot his ship about a hundred times? I remember we couldn't figure out how to kill him until you finally shot him enough without getting killed yourself, Justin (well not you but Duke Nukem ofcourse)..

Dr. Proton

Thanks for the other suggestions.

Yes, there were three Hugo's.

Don't know that I ever played Crystal Caves that much. Just Google it and maybe the images will jog your memory.

Yes, the image on the wiki page definitely brought back memories. I remember it being a very fun and intriguing game but would have to play it again to really remember why

You can play most of these games online here. The girls & I have replayed most of them and they work pretty well.

Hey Luke...that's a nice website. The games do seem to run good except I hate that the window is so small. It appears that it uses DosBox as well, but is running underneath a Java applet. Pretty neat. If you use DosBox on your own, you can get a full screen experience and it looks exactly like it is supposed to.

Besides the fact that you get your own Dos directories and edit access to the program files. I didn't try it, but I'm guessing the website doesn't let you save a game.

Jacob said...

Cool website, Luke but is there a way to play without having to fork over all the personal data and credit card info?

Sweet...

We had a LOT of games! I don't remember it seeming like that many back then.

Not sure what you mean Jacob. Everything on that site is free and you don't have to log in.
