Goldvein Virginia

Do any of you kids remember going into the small store in Goldvein Virginia? I think it was right on route 17. The man had glass cases with gold nuggets and vials of gold dust and many framed pictures on the walls of gold mining days. I don't know if we ever went there once we moved to Culpeper so probably only Justin might remember. It was only approx 5 miles from our house in Sumerduck. I have a paperback book about Gold mines of Fauquier County Virginia that I bought at that store. I thought I might check to see if it is worth anything to someone! I got sidetracked and now I am writing this blog piece! I was thinking it would be an interesting trip for Jacob to do with his family since he doesn't live to far from Goldvein. Check out this link. I have passed that place dozens of times in the past couple years and thought about stoping. I don't remember going before.
There are many abandoned gold mines in Virginia. It was the top gold producing state in the union before the California god rush. Many miners left Virginia to go west and since then Virginia gold mining has pretty much ceased. I believe it is still considered the second highest gold deposit state next to California. The boys and i have spent many hours at our creek with nothing to show but a partial spear head and some interesting pieces of quartz. Fun times though, for me anyway. The boys were probably just left with the impression their dad is a crazed maniac with to much free time on his hands.

I can't say that I remember that. I remember hearing about Goldvein, but I don't remember ever visiting there. I looked for a picture of the store online to try and jog my memory, but no luck.
