Anyone still hamming?
I just renewed my license and found a free 2 meter radio and various equipment on craigslist. The only antenna that I have right now is the magnetic car mount type and I can't seem to hit any of the repeaters. I'm wondering if the transmitter on this old rig works. I have listened to several conversations on the local repeaters so I know that part works. I wish I could test it somehow. It'd be nice to have a second 2 meter radio to test it with.

I had no idea that the morse code requirement for licensing was removed completely in 2003. Even the Extra class license no longer requires any morse code testing at all. That was always the major hurdle. I can remember Luke trying for long time to get the General class 13 WPM. Did you ever get that, Luke? I think I may study and try to get these licenses.
Wow...so much has changed. I was wrong about the 2003 date above. It was actually 2006 for the U.S. Also, there are only three license classes now. Remember that there used to be Novice, Technician, Technician Plus, General, Advanced, and Extra. Now there is only Technician, General and Extra.
So does that mean us current novices were automatically advanced to technician?
I'm not sure, Jake. I kind of wondered the same thing. Nice play on words with "advanced" to technician. "General"ly speaking, it would be nice to get a little something "Extra". :)
No, not me. I think my license expired years ago. I did pass the general class morse code but never passed the written test. My 2 meter radio was either stolen or lost years ago as well.
Wow, Luke. That 13wpm morse seemed impossible to me. Sorry to hear about your radio. That was a nice one. That was purchased in Warrenton somewhere wasn't it? Well, if you ever want to get back into it, at least it is easier now. I ordered the general class study guide yesterday. It is good through the end of next year. If I pass the test this summer sometime, then I can send the book to one of you guys if you want it.
