I'm addicted to this game...
I can solve it in about 90 to 110 moves, and my record (working together with Sara) is 68. Curious if anyone here can do better. The solution says it can be done in 44 moves.

I've played with this for a while now and can't figure out how to do it at all. I can't make a single row right.
Alright...I admit it. You got me addicted too. I went for help on the net. After getting some techniques understood I was able to do it in 96 moves and am sure I can improve on that with some more time. I admit this was sort of cheating, but I'm ok with that. :) Another version of this is found at http://www.javaonthebrain.com/java/puzz15/index.html and some help on solving techniques can be found on the same site. http://www.javaonthebrain.com/java/puzz15/technical.html
Thanks for the fun, Luke. You made me stay up late and now I will be too tired to be on time for work. (Actually, I am secretly hoping that work will be cancelled as we are getting lots of snow tonight.)
94 moves
That's pretty good. I usually take at least a hundred. I did the same as you and did some reading on basic strategies in order to improve my score. I tried a few others on the web that were pretty good, but I kept coming back to this one.
Look here for all the sliding puzzles you could ever imagine:

The solving technique page you posted is good, but in the case of this puzzle I think you have to solve from the bottom up, because the empty square in the goal arrangement is at the top. I've been solving it by starting with the placement of the 15 square in the bottom right and working left and up. Are you doing the same, or is there a better strategy? I have the most difficulty with the top row when I am almost done. If I'm not careful, I seem to often end up in a very difficult mess there.
I also work from the bottom up. Right to left, bottom row first, then third row. You must first put the 14 and 15 in place and then position the 12 and 13 to slide into place, then the 10 and 11. When you get to the top two rows you are working as if the puzzle was turned 90 degrees to the right. Position the 3 and the 7 and slide them in. The others can be moved from there. 68 moves is awesome, though. I don't think you would ever accomplish that by using this method.
I've never been able to hit 68 again. Sounds like were using the same strategy. I can get 12-15 and 9-11 in about 30 some moves, but I waste a bunch of moves trying to get the 8 in place from right to left.
